Interview with Patrick Neubauer, Senior Software and Performance Engineer at Bank Julius Baer

We asked Patrick Neubauer how he works in a project environment and what he thinks of agile methods.

Which project are you currently involved in and do you use agile methods within this project?

Patrick Neubauer: In my current position as Senior Software and Performance Engineer at Julius Baer, I work on various projects in which I apply agile methods, in particular the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe). A current project I am involved in involves the implementation of modern synthetic monitoring and monitoring-as-code strategies.

What is the aim of this project and what are your tasks?

Patrick Neubauer: The main goal of the project is to improve the performance and reliability of our applications through real-time monitoring and data analysis. We want to ensure that our applications run smoothly and efficiently under different load conditions. As part of the team, I am personally responsible for the development and execution of load and performance tests. I am also involved in analysing the causes of performance problems and developing practical optimisation solutions.

What challenges do you encounter in agile project work?

Patrick Neubauer: Applying agile methods does indeed have its challenges, especially when it comes to coordinating different tasks and ensuring that all members of the team are on the same page. In addition, working within the SAFe model requires us to constantly adapt and reassess our goals and priorities.

Why did you decide to work according to agile methods in this project?

Patrick Neubauer: The decision in favour of agile methods was made mainly due to their flexibility and adaptability. They enable us to react quickly to changes and make continuous improvements. An important success factor is the close collaboration and communication within the team, which is promoted by the agile method.

Personally, I am a strong advocate of agile methods. They enable teams to work more efficiently and effectively. They promote a culture of continuous improvement and adaptability, which is essential in today's fast-moving technology world.
